TLG Annual Joy Fest Black Tie Gala Hosted By Diddy

I know I'm a week late, but this was such a positive event. I just wanted to share some moments of The Inaugural Joyfest 2010 with you.

On December 18, 2010, celebs headed out to The Ritz in Philly to the Joy To The World Fest. The fest raises awareness for hunger, homelessness and more. The party was hosted by Diddy and Jermaine Dupri keeping the music flowing. Other celebs there included: Fabolous, Free, Terrence J and Sheree Whitfield.

I had the pleasure to work behind the scenes of this party, styling the hair of the models / waitresses that worked the room in old Hollywood glam.

The event is the brainchild of Tyrone L. Gilliams Jr., a University of Pennsylvania graduate and ordained minister who heads T.L. Gilliams, LLC, a Pennsylvania-based private commodities trading firm with global holdings.

The weekend long event started on December 16th and ended on December 19th. Highlights of the weekend include a celebrity bowling night, a day of free kids’ activities; a black-tie gala with a red-carpet; a feeding initiative to reach 5,000 in need; and a closeout inspirational concert.

Happy New Years Resolutions To You

All of my adult life, I have been in and out of gyms. I've lost and gained wait over and over. I know plenty of people who have walked my path, and if you are not one of those people who struggle with weight or a healthy lifestyle, God has truly blessed you. We are now in the month of December. This is the month when we start thinking about our year and what we did and didn't do. New year resolutions start to form, and we make promises that no matter what happens in that year, we will make good on that list.

I know that I always put the gym on the top of my list. I promise every year that I am going to treat my body as a temple. Well, anyone that knows me knows I love food. Bread and Starches are my  friends. It has been the culprit in my yo-yo like weight for years. This is one of the reasons I started working out. I got my first gym membership when I was 18. I jumped in head first and I loved the way I felt when I hit the treadmill. I took all my frustrations out at the gym. I learned that It was a great stress reliever and I wanted to go all the time. My gym affair blossomed like a  flower, and like most flowers at the end of their season, it started to die. That flower describes my entire resolution list over the years. This year the gym has made it to the top of my list again.

Whats your new year resolution?  I hope that taking care of yourselves in the new year has made the list. If not, your list needs a little tweaking.

Lets have a happy, healthy, new year for 2011!

A healthy body leads to healthy hair and you know what that means....

Food Confessions For Thought

I have always kept a journal. It keeps all my secrets when I can trust no one. It does not judge me. I can say anything in my little book and lift the weight off of my shoulders with one stroke of my pen. It tells your story and can be the blueprint for the future. I imagine that I am writing to my future self because when I look back on my past journal entries, I can see how much I have grown. Our journals can heal or save us from our emotional selves.

The act of writing something down always makes it more real, more concrete than merely thinking it. When I see my thoughts on paper, or I make that confession that I couldn't tell anyone else, I am able to find ways to solve my problems just by seeing them in black and white ( I only write in black ink). Food journals work the same way. By listing all the foods that you eat during the day along with your snack, and  beverage intake,  you will see how you can make changes in your dietary life.

I guess your wondering why you may want to keep a food journal, especially if you don't keep a personal journal currently. If you are seriously considering a healthy lifestyle, tweaking in the form of a journal or keeping a record of what your are eating may be something worth trying. Our hair and body need the proper nutrients to operate at a maximum performance. Here are six reasons why you should keep a food journal

1. Account for all the "little" extras
Even though you may eat healthy as a rule, poor snacking could be killing your diet.

2. Remind yourself you can have a treat or a reward.
Keeping track of your food intake over the course of a day or a week gives you the freedom to enjoy a treat once in a while without feeling guilty.

3. Be aware of when you are eating
Are you a late night snacker?  Do you miss meals during the day? remind yourself by tracking your constant progress.

4.Portion control
You can still control your food intake, even if you don't own a scale. Write down that large order of pasta you ordered out the night before so that you can take future precautions.

5.See your habits changing
Seeing your personal growth over a period of time can be very motivating. Backsliding days can be adverted by looking at previous entries.

6. Boost your self-control
Knowing you have to write down everything you eat makes you think twice about eating certain foods.

You can find food journals at your local book store but you can just as easily use a note book. In the age of technology, blackberry and most media phones are installing applications for food journals too. I guess it would depend on what your needs are.  You don't realize what or how much you are eating until you write a food diary.

Sleep cute and wake up beautiful

Having beautiful hair everyday can be a task, especially when you have to  prepare for it  nightly. I just recently started wearing a long weave and I forgot how tedious long hair can be (especially when it's not yours).
I want to keep the curly look I that got, so I will put my hair in rollers. For sleeping purposes I used the flexible roller rods.

Today when I took my hair down it looked really good and it fell nicely during the day.

Now tomorrow will be a challenge because I will be hitting the gym. It will be interesting to see what my hair will look like when I finish sweating. If my curls don't make it I guess i will have to wear it in a wrap style.

I'll keep you posted...

And it all began...........

I talked about this blog for a while. I guess I thought it would write itself. After months of procrastination, I finally started to type.
This blog is about hair, health and all things beautiful. Beauty from the inside out. If I can think about anything else...it will be about that to :-)....Seriously, its about hair care and just simply caring for yourself.
This blog will be a work  in progress. As I grow, we will all grow. XOXO.

Breaking the Myth..... When should I get a trim?

It always amazes me when a client says to me that they don't want a trim when they need one oh so bad! Usually the reason is because they are trying to let their hair grow. What most people fail to realize is that the hair would grow faster when the hair received a trim on a regular basis.

On an average your hair grows about a half an inch per month. Hair that is not trimmed on a regular basis.will result in split ends scientifically known as trichoptilosis. There is no way to repair split ends; when they occur, the split part of the hair must be trimmed. Can you thread a needle if the thread is frayed? Of course not. Without regular trims the hair will begin to split up the hair shaft. Just think of each strand of hair like a piece of thread. You want to keep it smooth as possible.

I suggest that you trim your hair every six to eight weeks with a professional stylist. A good trim helps the hair maintain its style longer and tangles quickly.
